Medical vs Non-Medical Home Care: What You Need to Know

Ernesto J. Johnson • May 12, 2023

If you or a loved one needs some assistance to stay safe and comfortable at home, you may be wondering what kind of home care services are available and how they differ. Home care can be broadly divided into two categories: medical and non-medical. In this article, we will explain the main differences between these two types of home care, the benefits and costs of each, and how to choose the best option for your situation.

What is medical home care?

Medical home care, also known as home health care, is a type of care that involves skilled medical professionals who provide various health services at your home. These services may include:

  • Nursing care, such as wound care, injections, catheter care, medication management, pain management, and health education.
  • Physical therapy, such as mobility training, exercises, and fall prevention.
  • Occupational therapy, such as assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), adaptive equipment, and cognitive training.
  • Speech therapy, such as communication skills, swallowing disorders, and voice problems.
  • Respiratory therapy, such as oxygen therapy, nebulizer treatments, and breathing exercises.

Medical home care is usually prescribed by a doctor after a hospitalization, surgery, injury, or illness. The goal of medical home care is to help you recover from your condition, improve your health outcomes, and prevent complications or hospital readmissions. Medical home care is typically covered by Medicare or private insurance if you meet certain eligibility criteria.

What is non-medical home care?

Non-medical home care, also known as  personal care  or  companion care , is a type of care that involves trained caregivers who provide non-medical assistance and support at your home. These services may include:

  • Personal care, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, feeding, and continence care.
  • Homemaker services, such as light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, grocery shopping, and errands.
  • Companion services, such as socialization, conversation, entertainment, hobbies, and transportation.
  • Medication reminders, such as helping you remember when and how to take your prescribed medications.

Non-medical home care is usually requested by seniors who want to remain independent at home but need some help with their daily routines or tasks. The goal of non-medical home care is to help you maintain your quality of life, independence, and dignity by providing you with the support and companionship you need.

How to choose between medical and non-medical home care?

The choice between medical and non-medical home care depends on your specific needs and preferences. Here are some factors to consider when making this decision:

  • The level of care you need. If you need skilled medical services that can only be provided by licensed professionals, then medical home care is the best option for you. If you need help with non-medical tasks that do not require medical skills or training, then non-medical home care may be sufficient for you.
  • The cost of care. Medical home care is more expensive than non-medical home care because it involves higher-level skills and equipment. However, medical home care may be covered by Medicare or private insurance if you qualify. Non-medical home care is usually paid out-of-pocket or by long-term care insurance. Medicare does not cover non-medical home care because it is considered custodial rather than medical.
  • The availability of caregivers. Medical home care requires a referral from a doctor and a plan of care that specifies the type and frequency of services you need. You may have limited choices in selecting your medical home care provider depending on your insurance plan or location. Non-medical home care does not require a referral or a plan of care. You can choose your non-medical home care provider based on your preferences and budget.
